End-of-Year Musings

End-of-Year Musings

As the days dwindle and the closing of the year 2020 is at hand, I have been reflecting on the fishing season that could have been. With the closures of the state parks and the restrictions of the charter and party boats due to the pandemic, a sportsman didn’t know from day to day what was open and what was closed.  While I was quite proud of myself to find some fishing holes where no one was around, fishing this season still wasn’t the same.  I didn’t see the usual faces that I have become accustomed to seeing over the years. Basically, fishing this year in some of my favorite spots was like fishing in a ghost town, and I am betting my fellow fishermen had similar experiences.

Hopefully, with the new inoculations coming out, things will be different in 2021.  And as always, there is some good fishing coming soon in the months ahead.  I like to start fishing for Walleyes in February on the great Delaware River.  Also, there is some excellent Cod fishing in the Atlantic Ocean this time of year, even though we don’t yet know about the charter boats and what the rules will be pertaining to the COVID-19 virus.  This past Fall, I stayed in the woods and did a lot of archery hunting due to the fact that I couldn’t do the fishing I wanted to; a true sportsman will find ways to appease his lust for the outdoors in any variety of ways.  But fishing is and always will be my true love.  And since it is going to be a long cold winter, now is the time to get your gear ready for the warm weather coming.  Take your time and get your rods, reels, and tackle working properly as they should so that you are ready for the start of the new year’s fishing.  May it be a good season for all of us.

As I’m sitting here writing this, I realize that it’s the end of the year, and I need my new fishing license for 2021 which starts January 1st.  I’m going to get it today.  This way, I have the upcoming winter months to dream about some big lunkers on my fishing line!

I hope everyone had a joyful holiday season, and I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year with great fishing days ahead.
